Fortuny studied painting in Barcelona but went to Italy at the age of twenty. After visits to Morocco in 1860 and 1862 he painted numerous oriental subjects, which were much admired for their rich colours and bravura brushwork. Many young French and Italian Orientalist painters were inspired by his work. This study is an example of Fortuny's rapid but deft manipulation of colour and light. It may relate to a figure in his etching of 1866, Arabe Veillant Le Corps De Son Ami, but is also comparable in style to another watercolour dated 1869 (Museo del Prado, Madrid).

| Historical context | A comparable watercolour in the Museo del Prado, Madrid is dated 1869: see L.-Gil Fillol, Fortuny, Barcelona, 1952. But similarities in attitude between the model in SD.389 and in SP.268 (Arabe Veillant Le Corps De Son Ami), 1866 could indicate an earlier date. |
