Place of origin

This poster advertises the café-concert Divan Japonais in Paris. Using flat areas of colour, outline and sinuous silhouette, the French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) depicts the dancer Jane Avril and the critic Edouard Dujardin in the foreground, with the singer Yvette Guilbert on stage. With its 'oriental'-style decoration, the Divan Japonais was one of the many Paris haunts of Toulouse-Lautrec.
