This poster advertises the café-concert Divan Japonais in Paris. Using flat areas of colour, outline and sinuous silhouette, the French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) depicts the dancer Jane Avril and the critic Edouard Dujardin in the foreground, with the singer Yvette Guilbert on stage. With its 'oriental'-style decoration, the Divan Japonais was one of the many Paris haunts of Toulouse-Lautrec.

Physical description

Depicts the interior of a café-concert. A singer is partially obscured in the top left-hand corner. An auburn-haired woman in a black dress sits in the foreground. A man stands behind her wearing a top hat and carrying a cane. An orchestra is partially visible.
