Adolphe Sax & Co. display at the Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations, illustrated in Reports by the Juries of the Great Exhibition Vol. II
1852
London’s Great Exhibition of 1851 was recorded in a luxury, four-volume edition of reports by judges of the displays. This image is from the wind instruments section, showing the work of Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone. The complete edition of 137 sets of the reports contained about 21,000 photographs. These had to be hand-printed, trimmed and pasted into each book – the largest photographic publishing task undertaken at that time.
