In this pair of tableaux, a priest hears confession from a young woman, then grants her absolution. The strip of carpet in the foreground of the first image reveals the studio setting in which the scenes were staged. A pair of lit candles standing among the props on the table indicate the passage of time, having burnt down from one picture to the next.
