Making It Up: Photographic Fictions The source for this composition was a painting by Gerrit Dou of a woman washing pots and pans at a window. It even reproduces the conceit of the trompe-l’oeil frame within a frame, which recurs in the seventeenth-century Dutch artist’s work. While the original painting would have impressed viewers with its life-like precision, the photographic version is remarkable as a recreation of a painting. Marta Weiss
