Margaret Howell (1946) graduated from Goldsmiths College with a degree in Fine Art in 1969. She launched her eponymous fashion label in the early 1970s, offering classic menswear pieces in quality fabrics. In 1977 Howell opened her first menswear shop on South Moulton Street, London and, in response to demand from women buying her menswear, she launched a womenswear line in 1980.
Described as ‘British fashion’s queen of minimalism’ by journalist Susannah Frankel (independent.co.uk, 25 May 2012), Howell is known for her classic, quiet designs made to a high standard from traditional quality textiles. She favours fabrics such as Harris Tweed and Irish linen, and the majority of her knitwear is produced in Scotland. The tailoring is mainly produced in Italy. Often inspired by workwear, uniforms and country clothing, Howell aims to make timeless garments that will last for years.
