Kate Vaughan was a Victorian burlesque dancer and actress, known for developing the "skirt dance" - a more demure form of the can-can - and was often described as "the greatest dancer of her time". Vaughan had a seven-year engagement at the Gaiety Theatre between 1876 and 1883, where the skirt dance became popular and was regularly performed by the theatre's chorus line, the "Gaiety Girls". Vaughan retired from dancing in 1885, and later enjoyed considerable success as an actress in classic comedies.
