The scene painted in enamel on the lid by Philipp Ernst Schindler II (1723-93) is adapted from an engraving by Michel Aubert published in 1733. It shows Venus with her chariot drawn by swans finding the body of her lover, Adonis, who died while hunting.
Aubert's engraving was executed after a painting by François Boucher (1703-1770). By painting in shades of grey, Schindler has made the composition look like a fashionable Neo-classical cameo appropriate to the 1760s.
The scene is signed at the bottom: 'Schindler Wienn' (Vienna). The box is punched with the mark of the goldsmith 'IS' or 'SI'.
Schindler was the son of a porcelain painter at Meissen, where he worked between about 1740 and 1750. He moved to Vienna and in 1777 became director of painting at the imperial porcelain manufactory.
