THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS 1857 In the 1840s, images became the basis of conveying news. The telegraph brought information to newspaper editors almost instantaneously; the pictures of artist-reporters took somewhat longer by post. This family magazine gave 'cosy', reassuring views of politics, history, fashion and exploits in Imperial wars. In 1855, weekly circulation rose to 123,000.
