Place of origin

Small poster advertising Carmo's Horses at Bertram Mills' Circus, Olympia, London, 1928-29 season, presented by Captain Ankner.

Horse trainer Emmerich Ankner (1885-1954) had been a cavalry officer in the Austrian army and had trained in riding and dressage at the Imperial Riding School in his home city of Vienna. He appeared in circus equestrian acts on tour in Europe and South America, using the name 'Captain Ankner'. In 1928 he bought horses for Bertram Mills, which Mills sold on to Harry Cameron (1881-1944). Cameron, known as 'the Great Carmo', had recently formed the Great Carmo Circus and Ankner became the new circus's Equestrian Director. In his 1928-29 season at Olympia, Bertram Mills included two acts from the Great Carmo Circus: one featured animal trainer Togare with his lions, and the other was Carmo's Horses, presented by Ankner.
