FOXE'S 'BOOK OF MARTYRS' John Foxe, Actes and Monuments…,known as the 'Book of Martyrs',1596 Foxe's work, first published in 1563, described the struggle of Protestant martyrs for their faith. Its text and images were widely known and much copied, though the book itself was probably found only in the libraries of churches, institutions and particularly rich individuals. It was intended to challenge the Catholic Golden Legend (see number 16, in the case to your right).
