Historical context note

This sketch is reproduced in E.W. Cooke, Leaves From My Sketch-Book, John Murray, 1876, Vol.I, Pl.33, titled Date Palms On The Left Bank Of The Nile, Opposite Boolak.
Cooke visited Egypt at the suggestion of F. Goodall between January and April 1874 (see MS Journal). SD244-251 include some sketches done on the spot and others drawn subsequently. Other sketches from the trip are held at the RA and VAM, DPD. He exhibited Nile views at the RA, 1875-77. His Leaves from my Sketch-book (1st & 2nd series, 1876-7) includes lithographs of twenty-two Nile views: see SP173?174.
