Historical context
C. H (or H., C) was probably a Special Artist for the Illustrated London News. The same monogram appears on an engraving of the Oltenitza, North Bank of The Danube in the ILN, 2 June, 1877, p.508, accredited to `one of our Special Artists'; and again on 2 March 1878, p.188, View From Constantinople, Showing Prince's Islands In The Distance, accredited to `an obliging correspondent' (p.187). There were a number of artists sent out to cover the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-8. For suggestions as to the identity of this one, see Searight Archive. See also Houfe, 1981, Chapter 7, pp.136-147.
