Object history
According to Rodney Searight: - `Bt Christie's, [16] March 1979 [185], £22' [with SD189]. Formerly in the collection of John Burgon Bickersteth, godson of the artist.
Historical context
From September 1861 to July 1863 Burgon accompanied a Miss Webb and her party on a tour of the Holy Land, visiting Cairo, the Nile, Sinai, Petra, Hebron, Jerusalem, Jaffa and Beirut. See R. Usborne, `Carving their names on the walls of time', Aramco World Magazine, March April 1976.
