The Forge

Goblet
ca.1981 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The revival of point engraving on glass in the 20th century is a particularly British phenomenon. Primarily taking the form of topographical illustration, it follows a tradition of neo-Romanticism evident in mid-20th century British painting. Point engraving of this type has been practiced at a high level by only a handful of artists, Peter David is one such artist.
David's Work was admired by the engraver Lawrence Whistler, and illustrated prominently in his survey Point Engraving on Glass (1992). This engraved goblet, 'The Forge', exemplifies the delicacy and subtle illusion achievable through the technique. According to the artist's widow, it was one of his favourite engraved works, and is known to have been lent back to the artist for exhibition on more than one occasion.
