This jumper was designed by Mary Quant for John Laing in the 1960s. John Laing is a prominent Scottish knitwear manufacturer. The donor, Stella Kateb, bought this jumper from the 21 Shop at Woolands department store, Knightsbridge where she worked in the 1960s. She recalls this style being a top seller and "flying off the shelves".

The jumper has an exaggerated neckline, reminiscent of contemporary cricket jumpers. Quant repeated this is a feature in other designs.

[Mary Quant Exhibition, 2019] V-NECK SWEATER 1963 Worn by Stella Kateb Sportswear is regularly referenced in Quant’s designs. Made in Scotland, this jumper with a comically exaggerated V-neck takes its inspiration from men’s traditional cricket whites. Stella Kateb bought it from the 21 shop, a boutique for young fashion inspired by Bazaar, at Woollands department store in Knightsbridge, London. Kateb worked at the 21 shop in the 1960s and recalls this style ‘flying off the shelves’. This in-house boutique was directly inspired by the success of Mary Quant’s brand, emulating her marketing strategies such as bold graphic design for labels, packaging and advertising, and informal, fast-paced fashion shows with live bands.
