Gallery label
Lactoid: the casein plastic London, 1938 Lactoid, or casein, is a form of plastic made from milk. It was invented in the early 20th century and used as an alternative to expensive materials such as ivory or mother of pearl. The bold cover design of this brochure combines a photograph of buttons – the manufacture of which was the main use of the material – with a stylised cow to signify Lactoid’s unusual origin. Halftone and lithography Designed by Maurice V. Bennett (worked 1940s–70s) for Lund, Humphries & Co. Ltd Issued by British Xylonite Co. Ltd Museum no. 38041800977852(2018)
Bibliographic reference
'Art & Industry' periodical, 1938: Examples of British Xylonite advertising by Lund Humphries... "Lactoid" combines formalised design with photography in showing the origin and main use of this Casein plastic. Throughout the series, typography predominates, reinforced by photography and by pleasant but subordinate designs.
