Beatrix Potter often made sketches of her pets and other animals she came across, including farm animals. This sheet is dated 16 September 1904, when Potter was staying at Lingholm near Keswick. She and her parents enjoyed long summer holidays away from their London home, and had been in the Lake District since July.
