Robinson illustrated the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood in four scenes. When he exhibited the series in 1858, some critics were charmed, but one wrote sarcastically that the photographs proved the truthfulness of the famous story and expressed amazement that Robinson had been alive since ‘once upon a time’. For some, fictitious photographs like this were an inappropriate use of such a realistic medium.
