This cape has been made from chintz dress material for use in Friesland, where it would have been worn indoors or in bed. The blue-and-white design is unusual but may be influenced by printed textiles from Alsace in the fourth quarter of the 18th century.

Physical description
Circular cape of painted and dyed cotton chintz. With a design in a half drop repeat of blue flowers and fruiting branches meandering from a cluster of blue flowerhead and foliage on a white ground. With two armholes. Lined with Dutch woollen fabric. With a narrow neckband with a hook at the throat.
