Publisher:

Description:
5 v. : ill. ; 30-43 cm.

Description based on : [No. 1] (Oct. 14-27 [1966]) and subsequent issues ; title from masthead.
For most of its life the periodical had no single named editor ; usually it was edited collectively by changing groups of those involved generally in the production. The first ten issues were edited by Tom McGrath ; Nos. 26 (Oct. 27-Nov. 9 1967) to 29 (April 19-May 2 1967) had as the named editor Bill Levy, who was also heavily involved editorially and in most other aspects of production until 1969. Sid Rawle was co-publisher and editor of Vol. 3 (1975).
Published in A3 newspaper format, except for issue nos. 125 (9-[23] March 1972) to 132 (19 June-[3 July] 1972), which were in A4 magazine format with full colour covers.
The first two issues, dated Oct. 14-27 [1966] and Oct. 31-Nov. 13 [1966], were not printed with issue numbers, but constituted Nos. 1 and 2. Thereafter issues (mostly published fortnightly with occasional short gaps) were numbered in one continuous sequence until No. 164 (Oct. 5-19 1973). Publication suspended Oct. 1973 to May 1974. Vol. 2 contains issues numbered 1 (May/June 1974), 2 (July 1974) and 3 (August 1974). Publication suspended Sept. 1974 to May 1975. Vol. 3 contains issues numbered 1 (June 1975), 2 (July 1975), 3 (Aug. 1975) and 4 (Sept. 1975). Publication suspended Oct. 1975 to 1976). The next issues were designated [19]76 : no. 1 to [19]76 no. 4 : these were not dated but were probably published Sept. to Dec. 1976. The subsequent monthly issues dated Jan. 1977 to Aug. 1977 were numbered 5 to 12 but were not assigned any volume number. Publication suspended Sept. to 1977 ; Vol. 4 contains issues numbered 1 ( 1978) to 12 (Dec. 1978 ; Vol. 5 contains issues numbered 1 (Mar. 1979), 2 (May 1979), 3 ( 1979), 4 ( 1979) and 5 (Jan./Feb. 1980). The final issue, dated Summer 1980, is unnumbered.
An emergency, interim issue numbered 10.5 (dated Easter 1967) was published between No. 10 (Mar. 13-26 1967) and 11 (21-28 April [1967]) ; the emergency issue was a result of a police raid on the magazine's premises.
A special "New Year 1968" poster was designated No. 22.5 ; published with No. 22 (Dec. 15-28 1967).
An unnumbered, undated "pirate" issue was produced and issued 13 October 1969, between "official" 'International times' no. 66 (Oct. 10-23 1969) and 67 (Nov. 6-20 1969). Produced as a result of a dispute between the editorial committee and some of the staff ; the latter occupied the magazine's premises temporarily and produced their own issue of the magazine.

Summary:
" ... the longest running of the British underground newspapers of the 1960's. The emphasis of the paper changes from time to time with the involvement of different writers and editors : at some times dominated with maaters of sex and drugs, at others with politics, literature and justice. Overall the mood is iconoclastic, questioning, radical. The angry, rebellious, provocative attitude of the paper mirrors that of the 1960's ... " -- extract from David Batterham's catalogue list no.
