BINDING of an ordinary book Edward Cocker, Multum in parvo … a copy book, 1661 Schoolbooks were not commonly given luxury bindings. In this cheap binding, the loose leaves were first held together by stitching through a blue paper cover. Inscriptions show that it was used in this state. A later owner provided better protection: the leaves were stitched into thick booklets and sewn onto four leather thongs. These thongs were laced into pasteboards covered with parchment.
