Palampore

ca. 1775 - ca. 1790 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This large chintz palampore (hanging or bed-cover) has an unusually elaborate rocky mound at the base of its flowering tree, with animals and many different designs of rock. The field is also full of lively animals amongst the foliage of the tree, and the background is covered with a subtle 'vermicular' or worm-like pattern which is produced by hand-painting the design with a mordant, probably alum, but not dyeing it.
