En Vitesse

Photograph
1903 (photographed)
Artist/Maker

Demachy came from a wealthy banking family and was one of the first automobile owners in France. He was a proponent of the gum bichromate process, a technique that allowed for brushwork and other manipulation, yielding pictures that looked more like paintings or drawings than photographs. Here, he used it to amplify the blur of a speeding car and the dust cloud in its wake.
