Paneth was a chemist born in Austria, who emigrated to Britain to escape the Nazi regime. After the war he became director of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry. He taught himself photography and experimented with autochrome. He took many pictures of travels with his family. This photograph shows his son Heinz, who was born in 1918. Twenty years after Paneth’s death, his daughter Eva donated two thousand of his photographs to the Royal Photographic Society.
