Place of origin

Posed photograph of Anton Dolin and Leon Woizikovsky taken onstage at the London Coliseum Theatre during December 1924 against the backdrop of Baba Yaga designed by Mikhail Larionov. Anton Dolin was Le Beau Gosse or handsome boy, with his love of performing acrobatics, and Léon Woizikowsky, dressed as the Golfer, was inspired by the Prince of Wales and his love of golf.

Le Train Bleu, first performed by Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes at the Théâtre des Champs Élyséss, Paris on 20 June 1924, was choreographed by Bronislava Nijinska to music by Darius Milhaud, with a set designed by Henri Laurens and costumes by Coco Chanel. The ballet was partly inspired by Dolin's displays of acrobatics and an interest shared with Nijinska who recalled being taken by her father to a Coronation Fair in 1896 in Narva, and from performances in the variety theatres in which her parents danced: ‘Picking up all these acrobatics from the circus proved useful to me eventually in my choreography, Le Renard, Le Train Bleu, etc.’
