Brief description | 19thC; Anon. Construction of Crystal Palace |
Gallery label | The Crystal Palace was first built in 1851 in Hyde Park, London. Constructed in kit-form, it had 1060 iron columns, 300,000 panes of glass and 200 miles of sash bars. It housed the Great Exhibition, which showcased the best of arts and industry from around the world. The event made the new art and science of photography very popular.
When the building was eventually reconstructed in Sydenham as an exhibition hall, Delamotte was commissioned to document the process. (2008/2009) |
