Susan Cross works principally with gold and silver wire to produce work that explores ideas of line, texture and layering, with oxidized silver wire used like an ‘inky line’. This brooch illustrates her innovative use of textile techniques to create semi-transparent structures that allow the play of light and shadow when worn on the body. In 2007 she was awarded joint first prize in the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize.

Physical description

A rectangle of loosely looped, twisted dark grey silver wire provides an openwork setting for a gleaming circle made up of multiple strands of twisted gold wire. At the back but fully visible is a slightly smaller circle wrapped with the dark grey wire. The pin, which attaches to the smaller circle at the back, is of gold with a catch of silver.
