In 2002, San Francisco was one of the cities competing to be the official United States Candidate City for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. As part of that drive, The Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee (BASOC) drafted the graphic designer and San Francisco resident, Rick Tharp (or "Mr. Tharp", 1952-2005), to oversee a competition to design a poster for the bid. Tharp himself selected twelve local artists to participate under the theme 'The Bridge to the Future'.
