Gallery label | NEO-CLASSICAL STYLE
In Britain, softly draping muslin dresses became fashionable in the late 18th century as part of the Neo-classical style. They were intended to allude to the draperies of classical sculpture, but their elegance belied the poor conditions of the Indian weavers who supplied the cloth. Kashmir shawls were an ideal accessory. Following a French lead, they became immensely sought-after in Britain.
