Artist/Maker |
Daguerreotype of a head-and-shoulders portrait of an elderly man with receding white hair. The sitter is identified as Sir Charles Fellows MD by the label on the back of the case. Sir Charles Fellows (1799-1860) was a British archaeologist who transported a large number of marble sculptures to England. He was knighted in 1845.
The daguerreotype is in a gold-coloured mount with moulded scrolling vine decoration and stamped with 'Beard Patentee', and a rectangular window. This is glazed, and the layers of glass and metal held together with black tape around the edges. This edging is coming away, so the sheet of glass is almost separated.
