LETTERS OF IGNATIUS SANCHO Joseph Jekyll, Letters of the late Ignatius Sancho, an African, London, 1803 (5th edition; 1st edition published 1782 Born aboard a slave ship and orphaned aged two, Ignatius Sancho (1729-1780) was raised in England. He received an education under the patronage of the Dukes of Montagu, and became famous in contemporary literary and artistic circles. This engraving is based on a portrait painted by Thomas Gainsborough in 1768. Printed with engraved frontispiece. After a painting by Thomas Gainsborough (born in Sudbury, Suffolk, 1727, died in in London, 1788); engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi (born in Florence, 1727, died in Lisbon, 1815) Donated by the Rev.
