Place of origin |
Bronze crowned Buddha, likely identified as Akshobhya, seated in the 'earth touching' (bhūmisparśa mudrā) posture on a lotus pedestal. He wears a detachable crown, earrings and breast plate richly jewelled with turquoise, rubies, coral and other stones. The figure sits on an elaborate altar with detachable side pieces, an overarching back piece (prabhā-maṇḍala) displaying the five Buddhas (left to right): Akshobya, Ratnasambhava, Vairocana, Amitabha, and Amoghasiddhi. Kinnaras stand below these figures on either side, below which two Buddhas stand in a posture identified with the Buddha Dipankara. The lotus pedestal sits on a rectangular base supported by two elephants, who are associated with the Buddha Akshobhya, and lions. Several separate pieces show yalis standing on the backs on elephants. Two brass pillars terminate in figures of Garuda kneeling in a posture of devotion.
