Landscape, architecture and optical illusion are recurrent themes in Sarah Woodfine's work. Here the night sky, moon and snowy field are conjured up by heavy pencil shading and blank paper alone. The oversized wood-grain effect of the windmill, illuminated by the moonlight, gives a fantastical effect.

Physical description

The top third of the sheet is coated densely with graphite, and the bottom two thirds left blank. Against the dark background is a circular area with no graphite, representing a full moon, and a windmill decorated with a wood-grain pattern.
