Object history
Jones, who trained as a marine painter, understood the conventions of contrasting textures and surfaces in a still life. This arrangement of found objects in a dockside setting uses the verticals and horizontals of the heavy wooden fence to emphasize the rounded forms and texture of the wooden buoys and the natural form of the section of tree trunk. Like much of his work, Jones has created a composition with a balance of light, dark, shape and texture.
Jones made a series of photographs in Bristol, many of them in and around the harbour. Ph.48-1983 is another example of dockside detail.
