Cloisonne Enamel Vase
Vase
c.1880-1885 (made)
c.1880-1885 (made)
Place of origin |
This vase is a rare example of the technique of cloisonné enamelling produced in Nagoya around 1880. Owing to its unfinished state, it exhibits excellent evidence of wirework techniques and of both filled and partially filled cloisons. The vase is unusually large and it is possible that this may have been the reason it was never completed, as it is of an odd oval shape, possibly due to distortion during the firing process. Why it was not then simply discarded is unknown.
