This blue straw wide-brimmed hat was intended to be worn over a sprigged cotton headscarf tied under the chin. The donor wore this hat to Ascot in 1938.

The designer, Elsa Schiaparelli was famous for her creative fashion designs and surprising touches in the 1930s. Her skill was in taking normal garments and using unexpected details and accessories to make them extraordinary. This hat, which would have combined an elegant and fashionable wide brim with a practical headscarf, is typical of her eccentric style.
