In this drawing, the striking faceted design profile of the Jin Mao Tower is given a vertiginous perspective by artist Gilbert Gorski. The building started construction in 1994, a year after this drawing was made, to designs by the architect Adrian Smith of SOM. When completed in 1999, the 95-storey tower joined the bulbous Oriental Pearl Tower as a major symbol of Shanghai’s regenerated Pudong district.
Gilbert Gorski writes of the medium: 'It is an original color pencil drawing, (prismacolor) on gray board, with some transparent watercolor applied with airbrush, and some touches of opaque white, sealed with Krylon spray varnish.' [email 30 April 2017]
