Materials and techniques | Moving to Spain in 1974, Beutlich started experimenting with materials that he found locally, including the esparto grass growing outside his home. At this stage he worked without a loom to produce what he called 'free-warp' tapestry, combining various different grasses and materials into his work. In the 'Off the Loom' 1997-98 Crafts Council touring exhibition booklet it is listed as being constructed of 'esparto grass, sisal, processed cotton wool and wrapped warp ends'. |

Object history | Donated by the Beutlich family. This hanging, Fungi 9 (sic), is listed in the booklet for 'Off the Loom', a Crafts Council touring exhibition of 1997-98. Also listed in this exhibition is a piece entitled Fungi 10, dated 1975. Another piece entitled Fungi 2, was sold in the 'Under Construction' exhibition by the Crafts Council in 1997. Beutlich often used the same titles for his pieces, differentiating them only by their number, as he revisited and explored favourite themes. |
