Historical context
The Humber Oil Company was founded in Kingston upon Hull in 1919. During the 1950s they began to produce model paint and other model making equipment. Probably Humbrol’s most instantly recognisable product is the 14ml tins of enamel paint they have produced for decades, with lids showing the colour of the paint inside. The company was bought in 1976 by the Hobby Products Group of Borden Inc., who also owned Heller, a large French model manufacturer. In 1986, Borden also bought Airfix following the closure of Palitoy.
