Gallery label | THE STRANGULATION OF ATAHUALPA, IN 'THE HISTORIES OF GEROLAMO BENZONI'
First published 1565, republished with new images in 1597
Girolamo Benzoni (1515-72?)
The anti-Spanish tone of this work is emphasised by the dramatic depiction of the execution of Atahualpa, the last king of the Peruvian Inca people, in 1533. Atahualpa's rejection of Christianity gave Francisco Pizarro, commander of the Spanish invasion force, an excuse to declare war on the Incas.
