THE STRANGULATION OF ATAHUALPA, IN 'THE HISTORIES OF GEROLAMO BENZONI' First published 1565, republished with new images in 1597 Girolamo Benzoni (1515-72?) The anti-Spanish tone of this work is emphasised by the dramatic depiction of the execution of Atahualpa, the last king of the Peruvian Inca people, in 1533. Atahualpa's rejection of Christianity gave Francisco Pizarro, commander of the Spanish invasion force, an excuse to declare war on the Incas. Ink on paper; engraved illustrations 1597 German edition, Das sechste Theil der neuwen Welt oder der Historien Hieron Benzo von Meylandt, edited by Theodor de Bry as part of his America series Museum no. 38041800140824 (24/03/2018)
