Nicolas de Nicolay (1517-83)
The image shows a Turkish holy man. The text portrays them as thieves, blasphemers and tricksters who deceive simple folk with fake palm readings. Though reflecting contemporary European prejudices, Nicoloay's influential books were among the first to provide first-hand images of Turkish people and customs. He based them on observations and sketches made when he accompanied a French embassy to Istanbul in 1551.
