MARTIN LUTHER'S TRANSLATION OF THE NEW TESTAMENT First published 1522 In the Catholic church, priests interpreted the Bible on behalf of the congregation. Luther dismissed the importance of priests, arguing that the divine text was straightforward enough for everyone to read and understand. To help people who could not read Latin he anonymously published a German translation in 1522. The pictures were carefully designed to aid meditation on the text.
