In the mid-17th century white porcelain wares produced in Dehua, Fujian (South China) that we call blanc de chine were exported in large numbers by Dutch East India Company traders. The themes of these figures were often based on the popular morals and motifs in Dutch genre paintings. This figure group is known commonly, but mistakenly, as "Admiral Duff and family".

Figure group in cream-white glaze, figures dressed in Dutch-style costumes. Apart from inclusion of the genre figure of dog (symbol of loyalty), a monkey is included in a typical scene in Dutch paintings.
