Stanley Green

Dress Fabric
1993 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Designed by Gary Page for Red or Dead's Spring/Summer Collection 1993, this textile is inspired by Stanley Green, 'The Protein Man', who could regularly be seen in London's Oxford Street from 1968 until his death in 1993, campaigning against the dangers of eating protein. The text printed on the fabric reads 'Less passion for less - protein; - less fish - meat bird - cheese - egg; peas - beans, nuts - and sitting', taken directly from Green's placards and hand-printed booklets which are now in the collection of the Museum of London. Red or Dead used the Green-inspired fabrics as a direct response to a fashion journalist who complained about street fashion. Wayne Hemmingway, founder and former Chairman of Red or Dead, stated 'He (Stanley Green) was about as much street as you can possibly get, as well as a prime example of English eccentricity'.
