Tir A'Mhurain, Isle of South Uist, Outer Hebrides, Scotland

Photograph
1954 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This photograph was taken by Paul Strand in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. The artist provides a compelling view of life on these small islands in his various photographs of 1954, which include many portraits as well as landscapes. Here, there are several buildings visible in the distance, including one at the centre of the composition. However, the vast sky and seascape as well as the wild horses on the beach in the foreground provide the focus of the photograph.

Gallery label
  • "Above all, Strand's clouds and skies had to arouse an aesthetic response, a response that signified that the world was dangerously beautiful. In [his book] Tir a'Mhurain, the people and the landscape matched each other, reflected each other, explained each other, as perhaps no other Strand group did. This was Strand's stated ambition: to interweave the elements of nature and habitation so as to evoke the rich interior life of even the simplest folk." - Estelle Jussim
