The production of Romeo and Juliet was part of Henry Irvings actor-management of the Lyceum Theatre, which saw him play the lead character in multiple productions alongside Ellen Terry. In this production, Irving played Romeo and Terry played Juliet, alongside William Terriss as Mercutio and music by Sir Julius Benedict.

The print shows a church's vault, at the centre are Romeo and Juliet lying on the catafalque. Juliet, played by Ellen Terry, is wearing a white dress. Leaning at the side, with his head on her legs is Romeo, played by Henry Irving, wearing a dark tunic and tights. On the stairs to the left of the scene is Friar Lawrence, played by 'Mr. Fernandez', and at the bottom of the steps lying dead is Paris, played by 'Mr. G. Alexander'.
