Description by Clifford Smith of box purchased in Exeter
It is "an interesting English box carved in apple-wood. The design on the lid consists of a carved panel, with cherubs heads in the corners, together with the owners initials and the date 1699. The sides are carved with a variety of chip carving. It is evidently a type of west-country work, and quite an uncommon specimen…we have nothing quite like it".
