Hwigyeong

Architectural Model
2015 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Kim uses ceramics as a way of commenting on the constant cycle of urban development in modern Seoul and the disappearance of its architectural legacy. Kim makes models of 1980s-1990s houses being demolished in her neighbourhood. The houses are characterised by a unique combination of western and Korean architectural features. Kim uses unfired clay to make her models. Once completed, she places them in shallow trays of water so that they slowly dissolve into puddles of mud. As a record, she photographs the models as they disintegrate.
